Introduction

Students and parents,  Welcome to Ms. Liz's blog!  Hailing from Syracuse, NY, I have lived in Naples, FL, for six years. My family and I have grown to love the warmer weather and smiles! My goal since I was a young girl was to become a teacher and teach future generations to develop and understand their true potential, recognize and learn how to cope in everyday life, and respect and care for one another. With the use of technology in education, we will go far this year in our research, writing exercises, and much more.  Malcolm Elementary has been nothing short of supportive and encouraging upon my arrival. Your children are in excellent hands. The administration, staff, and I will do everything possible to make you and your child's experience at Malcolm Elementary memorable.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Best regards,  Ms. Liz

Email in Education

Image
E-mail in education is beneficial and excellent communication among students, teachers, and parents. As adults, most have a personal, business, or both email address. We rely on this email address to communicate with family, colleagues, students, and more.  Students and teachers can significantly benefit from using e-mail to communicate and learn. By using email, this can assist students with language learning and literacy. This is done through online writing exercises and email exchanges. Email is also a great collaborative tool. For example, suppose students are working on a group project or simply have a question on their homework assignment. In that case, students can utilize email to complete these group tasks and answer questions another student may have.  Teachers benefit from email in education because it is a fast and efficient way to communicate with their students. Students of this generation rely heavily on technology; students are more apt to check their ema...

Texting as a Learning Tool

Image
Texting is the most preferred way to communicate. Not only can you text a single person, but you can create group chats, which allows the sender to send a message to multiple people. Teachers may find group chats extremely beneficial in communicating with their classroom.  "Texting and "text speak" can be used to help build foundational reading skills, such as word recognition and phonological awareness. It can also be used to generate discussions around formal and informal language and writing for different tasks, audiences, and purposes, all of which are necessary skills for meeting College and Career Readiness Standards in reading, writing, language, and speaking and listening." (AIR, 2014) Text messages can be used as appointment reminders, and teachers can use text to send links to quizzes, polls, and questions that may need feedback. In the age of apps, some apps, such as REMIND, allow for text messaging for students that simply go through the app, and studen...

Social Media for Educational Networking

Image
There are countless social networking platforms used for educational purposes. Social media is a necessary resource in education today. Teachers can join groups of other teachers to share ideas and resources. These groups can be found on Facebook, Canvas, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Social media's positive effects on education are better communication, timely information, and online socializing (Vizag, 2020).  Social media for educational networking benefits students as well. Students benefit from social media for educational networking because it encourages online learning, can acquire new skills, enhances creativity, and gives students a quality and up-to-date education. With benefits also come adverse effects social media can have on educational networking. The adverse effects include privacy may not be maintained, reduced self-learning, and distractions.  As teachers, we must monitor and maintain a balance within our classroom regarding social media for ed...

Technology for Problem Solving Spotlight

Image
When problem-solving, the first step is to define the problem at hand precisely and clearly. Using technology to help problem solve can be essential and necessary.  The importance of developing this skill today is such that, it is even highlighted in the Common Core Standards and has become a necessary component of any curriculum. Problem-solving directly implies decision-making, which is another important skill, not only for academics but for success in life in general  (Lizzappi, 2015).   Collecting data, viewing and analyzing online polls and surveys, and collaborating with others through different social media platf...
